It took considerable thought in the selection of a company name for the pasture-raised beef. Even though I have been using the name, Carmelo Peak Ranch, for my horse and cattle business since 2003, it also seemed like a good fit for the beef business. The property of Carmelo Peak Ranch is a section of the old Rancho Carmelo operated by K. D. Mathiot. Before the Rancho Carmelo Dude Ranch existed, the site was the stagecoach stop for upper Carmel Valley in the 1880's. Then during the 1930’s and through the 1960's, K.D. operated the property as California's first dude ranch/resort. He also raised beautiful horses that he often used for trail rides in Carmel Valley. In addition to the historical connotations with this land, the cattle are often grazing on grasslands above the Carmelo River.
